An executive perspective around the board table
- My contribution to a board is informed by my background in high-complexity executive leadership. I have led large-scale service delivery and transformation organisations where the board’s decisions had to be translated into operational reality for thousands of staff and millions of customers.
- This helps me recognise:
- When a proposal lacks the operational detail for clear governance oversight
- When strategic risk exists in implementation rather than in the strategic concept
- How to test whether management has the capability to deliver what is being promised
- How a board can support an executive through genuine challenge that leads to better delivery
BOARDS & CHAIRING
Boards & chairing
Independent judgement. Constructive challenge. Decisions that can be delivered.
I bring independent chair and governance experience across telecommunications, education, Crown entity, charitable and international settings.
My contribution sits where governance and delivery meet. I help boards clarify the real decision, test the evidence and assumptions behind it, manage competing perspectives and connect strategy with risk, investment, organisational capability and performance.
My executive experience keeps my governance judgement grounded in what implementation requires. I understand the importance of maintaining the boundary between governance and management, while ensuring that board decisions are clear, adequately resourced and capable of producing the intended result.
How I chair
Effective chairing creates the conditions for sound judgement, genuine deliberation and clarity about what happens next.
Calm authority
I create the conditions for rigorous, respectful deliberation. Different views need to be heard and tested without allowing discussion to become circular, personal or dominated by the strongest voice.
My role is not to provide every answer. It is to help the board identify the question that genuinely requires a decision, understand the evidence and consequences, and reach a clear and procedurally sound conclusion.
Independent judgement
I listen carefully, test assumptions and ask difficult questions constructively. I am comfortable working where interests differ, evidence is incomplete or decisions attract public and stakeholder scrutiny.
Independence also means being prepared to revisit an established view when the evidence changes.
Clarity after the decision
A good decision should leave directors and management with a shared understanding of what has been decided, why it was decided, which risks and assumptions remain, who holds accountability and what successful implementation will look like.
The board’s work does not end when the resolution is passed. Oversight should then focus on whether the decision is producing the intended outcomes, without the board stepping into management.
The value I bring to boards
Strategy and transformation
I help boards navigate shifts in technology, markets and customer expectations, ensuring that transformation is not just a strategic aspiration but an achievable plan with the necessary resourcing and focus on outcomes.
Risk and assurance
I move risk oversight beyond checking compliance. I focus on understanding the strategic risks that could impede progress, the resilience of the organisation, and the quality of the information the board receives.
Digital, data and AI
I bring a depth of experience in high-value digital and data-led environments. I assist boards in understanding both the opportunities and the ethical, security and operational implications of emerging technologies.
Organisational performance
I test the alignment between strategy, structure and capability. I look for the lead indicators of organisational health and the effectiveness of the executive leadership in driving sustainable performance.
Stakeholders and legitimacy
My experience across diverse sectors helps me understand how boards build and maintain legitimacy with shareholders, government, the public, and community stakeholders, particularly during periods of change.
Financial stewardship
I focus on ensuring that capital allocation and operational investment are tied directly to strategic priorities and that the board has clear oversight of the financial consequences of its decisions.

Principles that guide my governance
Humility & inquiry
Effective directors know that they don’t have all the answers. I prioritise listening and inquiry over early opinions.
Evidence & intuition
Governance requires the discipline to follow the evidence, while having the intuition to ask about what is missing from the data.
Operational empathy
Respect for management means understanding the complexity of delivery, without becoming so close that oversight is compromised.
Strategic patience
Transformation takes time. A board’s role is to keep the focus on long-term value, resisting the urge for reactive, short-term changes.
Absolute integrity
I am comfortable holding an independent view, even if it is uncomfortable or unpopular, if the evidence and integrity require it.
Constructive dissent
I value collegiate debate. Disagreement should be robust but always focused on reaching the best possible outcome for the organisation.
Professional standing
I am a Chartered Member of the Institute of Directors in New Zealand.
I hold a Bachelor of Technology and Master of Business Administration from Massey University and follow a continuous programme of professional development in governance, risk, and strategy.
