INTERIM LEADERSHIP
Interim Leadership
Experienced leadership when clarity, momentum and delivery matter.
Organisations do not always need another permanent executive. Sometimes they need experienced leadership for a defined period, a difficult transition or a specific organisational challenge.
I provide interim, fractional and fixed-term executive leadership when an organisation needs to establish priorities, improve performance, lead complex change or add senior capacity without creating a permanent role.
I bring an enterprise-wide perspective developed across substantial operations, strategy, governance, transformation, digital investment, stakeholder engagement and international growth. I can work across sectors because my contribution is grounded in how organisations make decisions, allocate resources, manage risk and turn strategy into delivery.
When interim leadership adds value
Interim leadership is most useful when an organisation needs more than temporary coverage. It should provide immediate executive capacity while improving the organisation’s ability to move forward.
Leadership transition
Managing the period between a permanent executive’s departure and their successor’s arrival. An interim appointment ensures the leadership team remains high-performing and strategic priorities aren’t paused.
Transformation
Implementing structural change, new operating models or major digital investment. I lead the difficult work that sits between strategy and delivery before handing a high-performing function to a permanent leader.
Performance improvement
Diagnosing and addressing problems in stagnant or low-performing teams. This requires establishing what is true, setting new directions and building the capability of the permanent team.
Organisational pressure
Supporting an executive team through a period of extreme workload, acute external scrutiny or significant unexpected challenges that require senior leadership capacity that isn't currently available.
A difficult function
Managing a function that needs radical reorientation or one that has become detached from the rest of the enterprise. I provide the leadership to re-align the function with the organisation’s purpose.
Additional executive capacity
When a chief executive needs a specific enterprise-wide project led by an experienced peer who can work effectively at board level while maintaining high trust with the executive team.
Experience that transfers across sectors
I operate at the boundary between strategy, operations and delivery. My technical background is in digital investment and transformation, but my primary contribution is as an enterprise leadership generalist.
I am experienced at working in high-trust environments where information is complex and decisions have significant public consequences. I build momentum by establishing what is true, identifying critical paths and removing obstacles to delivery.
I help boards and chief executives solve recurring leadership challenges, regardless of the sector’s specific technical domain.
Enterprise leadership
Leading large, complex portfolios across strategy, operations, technology and people. Connecting disparate functions into a unified enterprise focus.
Operational performance
Improving service standards, efficiency and workforce engagement by establishing operational clarity, better measurement and clear lines of accountability.
Governance and risk
Providing executive-level reporting and risk management that gives boards confidence. Navigating complex regulatory and compliance environments.
Transformation and change
Designing and implementing organisational change, new service delivery models and complex digital investment programs that deliver observable value.
Digital, data and AI
Leading the strategic adoption of technology. Moving digital investment from a cost centre to a driver of service performance and organisational intelligence.
Stakeholders and trust
Building and maintaining trust with government, partners and customers during complex change or heightened external scrutiny.
A career across different operating environments
Different sectors. Recurring leadership challenges.
I have led large teams and substantial budgets across different operating contexts, including:
- Regulatory bodies
- international education
- vocational & tertiary education
- telecommunications, IT and utilities
Evidence of delivery
An interim executive should create observable value within a defined period. My record includes:
75%
reduction in processing times for a national service portfolio following diagnostic review and process re-engineering.
43%
improvement in customer satisfaction within 18 months by connecting digital investment to frontline operational capability.
42% to 70%+
increase in employee engagement by re-aligning organisational purpose, improving leadership visibility and clarifying accountabilities.
$15M+
saved through commercial re-negotiation and operational efficiencies while increasing service output across a distributed network.
How I approach an interim assignment
Listen
Quickly identifying the informal power structures, history and cultural context that exist alongside the formal organisational chart.
Establish what is true
Looking beyond the dashboard to establish the real status of performance, risk, budget and capability. Eliminating ambiguity early.
Set direction
Clarifying priorities and expected standards. Ensuring everyone knows what matters most and what we are excluding to achieve it.
Deliver and transfer
Maintaining pace through execution while actively preparing the team and the function for a seamless transfer to permanent leadership.
The objective is not to make the organisation dependent on the interim leader. It is to leave the organisation clearer, stronger and better equipped to continue.
How I can contribute
I am available for assignments across New Zealand and internationally. Because of the nature of interim leadership, I can typically deploy quickly and adapt to the organisation’s specific rhythm of decision-making. My contributions typically fall into these areas:
- Interim chief executive or deputy chief executive assignments
- Fractional executive leadership
- Fixed-term transformation leadership
